The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, leading him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
