Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
