European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
