Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of foreign heritage in 2020.
